Liquid Coalescers

For the Purification of Fuel Oils and Lubricating Oils

The Vokes Filter Coalescer is a static device for the removal of solids and free water from Distillate and Light Liquid Fuels and Mineral Lubricating Oils.

The cartridge combines a long life depth type pre-filter media designed to give extended life by the removal of pipe scale, rust, waxes and asphaltenes that would otherwise cause the coalescent media to blind.

The pre-filter, together with the first and second stage coalescing medias effectively combine small droplets of water into large droplets which are then separated from the oil flow by gravity.

A final stripper screen is fitted to further minimise any risk of carry over of small droplets into the clean oil discharge.

The purified oil is discharged at the top of the housing, while the water is drained from the bottom.

Principal of Operation

The small droplets of water are intercepted by fibres and because of the hydrophilic nature of the fibres, are retained. As the number of droplets collected increases they join together to form a layer of water.

The flow of the oil then pushes this water through the media to the outside where it forms large droplets on the sock surrounding the cartridge.

These droplets then grow until they reach a size which causes them to fall off and drop to the bottom of the housing through gravity.

      

Benefits

  • Incorporation of the filter media in the coalescer cartridge eliminates the requirement for a separate pre-filter with its associated piping and valving. This is doubly important on a duplexed system and where available space is restricted.
  • The Filter Coalescer duplex 361/1 is supplied to handle a flow of 1.2m³/hr of light crude oil. It is one of several units supplied to Allen Diesels for use on 6S37G diesel engines on a pipeline project for The India Oil Company.
  • The Vokes Filter Coalescer does not have any high speed rotating parts. This makes it ideally suited for those applications where noise can be a problem, and the elimination of the requirement for a water supply to create a water seal helps to make this equipment ideal for marine installations.
    Many Vokes Filter Coalescers have been supplied for use on board both surface and sub-surface vessels where both space availability and noise levels create serious difficulties.
  • The Vokes Filter Coalescer is easily serviced requiring only the replacement of the cartridges; as such, highly trained servicing engineers are not required. The requirement for spares for stocking is also reduced to a single item plus associated seals.
    The Vokes Filter Coalescer 90m³/hr capacity unit is supplied as part of a distillate fuel oil treatment module installed at Keadby Combined Cycle Power Station.
  • The Vokes Filter Coalescer modules can be supplied as fully independent units requiring no outside supply other than an electrical supply for any pumps and heaters. There is no requirement for any separate water or pneumatic supply, or separate units for the removal of both solids and liquids.
    Many of these units are now in use around the world for Main Turbine Lubricating Oil Purification and Fuel Oil purification in countries as far apart as Australia to the UK. Supplied both as new equipment by the Steam and Gas Turbine and Diesel Engine manufacturer, and as upgrades to existing power plant.

Applications

The Vokes Filter Coalescer is designed for the removal of solids and water from distillate and light liquid fuels. This makes it an ideal solution to those applications where water can contaminate fuel oils in marine or land based Diesel and Gas Turbine installations.

The Vokes Filter Coalescer is suitable for installation in either bulk supply lines, prior to service tanks, or in the fuel lines to the prime mover. It can be used with or without other fine filtration equipment.

The Vokes Filter Coalescer is used on board ships, offshore installations, locomotives and in power stations as the main fuel purification equipment for either the prime mover, auxiliary equipment or main power generator.

Performance

For solids removal, an efficiency of 98% at 5µm is achieved. For free water removal it is down to 10ppm or below, depending upon the specific flow rating applied.

The effect of this high performance of water removal means the residual levels of soluble salts such as chlorides is virtually undetectable. This is of major importance in the case of those fuels which can be contaminated by saline water - for example water ballasted tanks on offshore platforms, fuel brought in by tanker or fuel stored in a marine environment. It also gives the opportunity of combining the Filter Coalescer with water washing.

The standard range of Filter Coalescers is designed to handle flow rates up to 200l/min (12m³/hr), with custom designed units produced for flow rates up to 1500l/min (90m³/hr).

Applications

The Vokes Filter Coalescer is designed for the removal of solids and water from mineral lubricating oils used in lubricating or hydraulic systems.

This makes it an ideal solution to those applications where water can contaminate oils through condensation, seals or glands.

The Vokes Filter Coalescer can be supplied by itself for the customer to pipe in to his system or in a variety of modules which can include pumps, heaters and control systems to provide self contained purification systems.

The Vokes Filter Coalescer is used in industries such as Power Generation, Sugar Refining and Marine, to provide the purification of lubricating oils in main and auxiliary steam turbines, gear boxes, stern tube and low pressure hydraulics systems. It is either used as a bypass system on the main tanks or from a bleed off the main oil supply line.

Performance

For solids removal, an efficiency of 98% at 5 microns is achieved.

The Vokes Coalescer will reduce free water levels in lubricating oil by 99% or more fo initial concentrations of around 8%. Free water can be reduced to better than 100ppm depending, of course, on the specific type of oil and the conditions encountered. So, for typical steam turbine applications at, for example, an oil flowrate of 7m³/hr this could mean that over half a cubic metre of water per hour would be removed.

The standard range of Filter Coalescers is designed to handle flow rates upto 60l/min (3.5m³/hr), with many units being custom designed to meet the customers specific system and industry requirements.

     

 


Oil Mist Eliminators

Large volumes of lubricating oil are necessary to cool and protect the internal working surfaces of rotating machinery. These conditions can create an oil mist has traditionally been vented to atmosphere. Vokes Oil Mist Eliminators are designed to capture this mist to help meet increasingly demanding environmental and safety legislation. Failure to deal with oil mist can in worst cases represent a significant explosion hazard or, at the very least, the oil can condense on surfaces to subsequently attract dirt.

What is Oil Mist ?

Oil within a machine is subjected to high temperatures and pressures during operation, which can result in the creation of oil mist. The mist typically consists of oil droplets ranging in size from 10µm down to 0.03µm and when vented into the atmosphere is normally visible as a blue-white smoke.

Vokes has researched the factors influencing oil mist emissions with the aim of satisfying the ever evolving and tightening environmental legislation that frequently refers to 'no visible emissions'. We have developed an efficient and cost effective solution to oil mist control.

Vokes Oil Mist Eliminators are available for airflow rates from 12m³/h (7cfm) to 4000m³/h (2330 cfm), selection of which type depends on application and whether a back pressure is acceptable within the machine.

Principles of Oil Mist Elimination

Vokes Oil Mist Eliminator cartridges remove entrained oil by a coalescing process. The cartridge contains an oleophilic (oil attracting) media which is designed to maximise oil removal while minimising differential pressures.

Droplet Formation and Breakdown  

The contaminated air stream is directed through specially developed Vokes cartridges, which consist of multiple layers of dense coalescing media. The oil attracting characteristics of the media ensures that oil droplets passing through the cartridge are attracted to the fine fibres. The depth of the media ensures that each oil droplet will find a fibre, even though the space between the fibres may be larger than the diameter of the oil droplet itself. Further droplets attach themselves to the fibres, joining together to form larger droplets with the continued removal of oil from the air stream. Eventually, either due to the force of gravity or the velocity of the air stream, these larger droplets breakaway and drain through the coalescer and eventually accumulate as free oil at the bottom of the eliminator.

Element Saturation and Equilibrium
During operation oil mist eliminator elements reach a state of saturation or equilibrium. This is the point at which the rate of oil removed from the air stream equals the rate at which it is drained away. Saturation is the normal operating condition and will continue until the cartridge is blocked by particulate contaminants released by the machine into the oil mist stream.

Benefits of Efficient Control

The need to vent lubricating oil systems to the atmosphere and the resulting plume of oil mist has long been recognised as a source of pollution. Although in the past it has been acceptable to simply control oil mist, legislation in many countries now defines control as 'no visible emissions'. While recognising the need to meet Environmental Protection & Safety legislation, the efficient control of oil mist can also reduce operating costs and improve the reliability of equipment.

  • 'No Visible Emissions'

To meet the objective of 'no visible emissions' all VOKES Oil Mist Eliminator cartridges are designed to a high performance specification with an initial efficiency of 99.98% @ 0.3µm.

  • Environmental Legislation

Increasingly stringent environmental legislation has come about as a result of public concern over the effects of emissions from industrial sources. VOKES Oil Mist Eliminators remove potential health hazards, minimise unpleasant odours and generally improve the quality of the environment.

  • Health & Safety Legislation

The control of oil mist emissions with a VOKES Oil Mist Eliminator is good health and safety practice, avoiding the accumulation of oil deposits inside and outside the installation. The operating efficiency of diesel engines and turbines is reduced when oil mist is sucked back into the air intakes. This can block the air filters and coat the internal surfaces with oil. A Vokes Oil Mist Eliminator improves the air quality in the vicinity of the air intake, which in turn helps to maintain power output and reduces the frequency of air filter replacement as a result of oil fouling.

Thousands of litres of oil can be lost from an installation over a period of a year due to oil mist emissions. The cost of replacement oil can be greatly reduced by returning the recovered oil back to the system.

Vokes MMF - Fan Assisted Oil Mist Eliminators

Vokes Fan Assisted Oil Mist Eliminators compensate for the differential pressure across the oil mist eliminator cartridge and can create a small depression within the machine if required. This eliminates unwanted pressurisation of the lubricating oil system itself. Fan assisted units are typically utilised for gas turbine lubricating systems and diesel engine crankcase breather applications. Vokes has developed an automatic control unit for these critical applications where it is essential to maintain a constant pressure within the oil system. The unit continually monitors system pressure and automatically adjusts the airflow to compensate immediately when there is a change in conditions.

The sizing of Vokes Oil Mist Eliminators is based on the air flow through the module. The required air flow for an application can be calculated by measuring the air velocity through a tube of know diameter exiting from the outlet to which the Oil Mist Eliminator is to be connected. Servicing and Cartridge Replacement

Vokes Oil Mist Eliminators have been designed to be quick and easy to service, with the cartridge(s) readily accessible for changing.

Vokes Oil Mist Eliminator cartridges are capable of giving an extended service life, which is only limited by particulate contaminants released by the machine into the airflow. Differential pressure gradually increases until a predetermined level is reached as particulates accumulate within the cartridges.
